Matt Christian’s Creature Features

christian_tank
Every week Mr. Christian requires his students to observe and report on the habits of a sea creature. The creatures dwell in a large reef aquarium located in the library and small aquarium housed in the school’s laboratory. Students are required to answer specific questions while they observe the natural behavior of the warm-water animals.
Matt Christian’s wants a cold-water touch tank because he understands that his students learn Science with less resistance when he has more hands-on activates in his classroom and he knows that little is known about the deepest and coldest parts of the ocean.

Although the existence of cold-water corals is recognized for several hundreds of years, it is only since the early nineties that scientists have realized that large coral reef structures thrive in parts of the ocean that remain unexplored. The individual cold-water reefs are generally smaller then their tropical counterparts, but the total surface area of all cold-water reefs are equal or even larger then the tropical reefs.
I met the members of the Capital District Marine Aquarist Society (CDMAS) at their annual meeting. This group of reef-oriented individuals holds informal, monthly meeting at a volunteers’ home.  They get together to share experiences, trade coral frags, and view other aquariums.  Dave Young, the groups Treasurer, persuaded me to drive the seven hours one-way to display the cold-water Sea Squirt. I reluctantly made the trip because I know that in order to gain the knowledge about cold water reef habitats necessary to accomplish our mission, Touch Tanks for Kids needs the the support of the aquarist community.
The Dr. Touch brings awareness to the problems facing our invaluable marine and aquatic resources.  Nature Conservancy scientists report that shellfish reefs worldwide have declined dramatically-Centuries of intensive fisheries extraction exacerbated by coastal degradation have put many reefs in jeopardy.Globally, 85 percent of reefs have been lost, making oyster reefs the most severely affected marine habitat on the planet.
Shellfish reefs and beds are essential to the health of marine ecosystemsRealistic and cost-effective solutionsin conservation, restoration, and management will help regenerate shellfish reefs and aquarium hobbyist like Matt, Dave and the other members of CDMAS have contributed greatly to the understanding of coral reef propagation.
“Little is known about cold-water reef propagation,” says Dave Young Treasure of CDMAS. Dave, who is available for Dr. Touch Tank visit in the Capital Region, explains that more research and experimentation will help solve coral reef issues.  “There very little information about cold-water species available and this is why I introduced the touch tank concept to our club.”

Learning from Interactive Education

Dave would really like to see Berlin High School of Berlin New York get a touch tank and work with Matt Christian to disseminate information about cold-water species and reef propagation. Matt has an abundance of knowledge to share and an open topped aquarium equipped with a superior filtration system will defiantly advance our knowledge of the cold-water oceans that surround us.

Touch Tanks For Kids Information

Touch Tanks For Kids Information

If you have been wondering what exactly is a Touch Tank For Kids, or how you can get one then this is the post for you.

A Touch Tank is a portable aquarium that provides a interactive learning experience with the ecosystem of a water source, ocean, lake or river.  The Touch Tank is a relatively low maintanance, physical learning tool that compells the learning experience.  It does this by providing kids with a hands on learning experience that will be lifelong.

Getting a Touch Tank for your organization takes a little effort in either grant writing, fund raising or both, but like anything else in life, that take effort, the rewards will be stunning and dynamic.

Touch Tanks for Kids is successful because there is a need for qualified teachers, aquatic experts, environmental scientists and interactive educational programs that improve America’s ability to teach science and to ignite the spark of learning in our students from the earliest ages possible.

Touch Tanks for Kids is appropriate for students of all ages and learning levels.  Any student can benefit from this type of hands on educational experience.

For grant information, watch the video on this page, and most of your questions will be answered.  If you need additional clarification, contact Mike Martin, director of Touch Tanks for Kids at mikemartin@touchtanksforkids.org.

Join Touch Tanks For Kids

Touch Tanks For Kids is a federally recognized nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improving science education in our schools.

How do they do it?  Touch Tanks For Kids provides a living breathing classroom.  Going to the ocean may not be possible for many classrooms in our country, let alone being able to see actual ocean life up close is a little difficult.

Imagine being in a classroom in Iowa and being able to physically touch a star fish, or observe a lobster up close.  Touch Tanks for Kids provides this experience in an easy to maintain, classroom aquarium.  The hope is that this interaction will breed a lifetime of interest in the ocean and maintaining it’s habitats.

Established in 2005 as a partnership between an elementary school teacher at the West Harpswell Island schol on the coast of Central Maine and Marine Ecological Habitats, a manufacturing plant in Biddeford, Maine, Touch Tanks For Kids is a federally recognized 501 c 3 nonprofit created in response to the needs of the education community.

Touch Tanks provide participants with numerous educational, social and environmental benefits.  They are unique, durable, lont-lasting, adaptable, portable, low maintenance, and accurately represent natual aquatic habitats that provide participants with a hands on learning tool.  People of all ages enjoy Touch Tanks in many educational settings with students and teachers reporting increased knowledge of natual aquatic habitats and a greater understanding of how our actions affect those ecosystems.

Touch Tanks provide participants with unlimited educational opportunities.  The hands-on experience connects students to nature and supports the knowledge learned from textbooks in a real way.  The Touch Tank is the perfect size for classroom use and public display and you are able to customize your order to fit almost any situation.

Touch Tanks For Kids is a partner of Greenville Eco Family in our joint venture to promote, to increase the knowledge about sound environmental practices and raise awareness of current environmental issues.

Touch Tanks For Kids Making A Difference In The World

Touch Tanks For Kids making a difference in the world.

Many great educators that specialize in Science tell me that students comprehend more and stay interested longer with interactive instruction.

Children must do science, to learn science Mr. Waldo, an elementary school teacher in Maine,  explained to me prior to going into detail about the many interactive activities in his classroom.  His excitement buried any reluctance that I had about the touch tank project that I became involved with to make amends for all the terrible things I did to the seas during my time in the Navy.  Polluting the environment by dispursing trash into the ocean while on duty in the Pacific Ocean.

I have learned since then that the Earth is living on borrowed time. Common household and commercial practices have produced devastating effects.

Fortunately, unlimited opportunities exist as a result. Hope exists because ingenuity focused on historical reference has abundant possibility.  Hope that I observed when I visited Mr. Waldo’s Science class the afternoon of March 7, 2009 at Berwick Academy in Southern Maine. Luckily, after I apologized for my past destructive actions, the students from Mr. Summer’s fourth grade class forgave me, and for that, I am thankful.

I was then able to spend a wonderful afternoon observing the impact that Touch Tanks For Kids can bring to virtually any learning environmet.

The touch tank provides a living, breathing ocean environment right in the classroom.  The students are able to interact with the display and really learn about that bioshere.

The interactive aspect of Touch Tanks For Kids provides a spark of knowledge that can burn into the flame of discovery.  Who knows what world problems may one day be solved by these young minds.

Interactive education and Touch Tanks For Kids is making a difference in our world.

Executive Director of Touch Tanks for Kids Recomends Plumb-Away

Hi there, my name is Mike Martin,

I am the Executive Director of Touch Tanks for Kids and our organization recommends that people use Plumb-Away because it works great and improves our children s chances of a better future. We are a grassroots 501(C)(3) aquatic and environmental science based educational organization.

To accomplish our mission, the organization provides and learning tools along with technical and material support to students and educators in a wide variety of venues.

Touch Tanks for Kids works to ensure clean water through awareness and education programs that promote actions and reduce environmental impacts. Plumb -Away is an environmentally sound solution to a common household problem, clogged drains! Both, Greenville Eco friendly and 1 Mark Consumer Products, the Plumb Away manufacture, donate a portion of their profits to our valuable programs.

DRAIN CLEANER CHEMICALS are among the most hazardous class of consumer products available. Accidental consumption can cause severe damage to the skin, eyes, lungs and trusted medical sources report possible death up to a month after ingestion.

Medline Plus as a service of the U.S. NATIONAL LIBARY OF MEDICINE AND THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH. This article discusses poisoning from swallowing or breathing in chemical drain cleaners.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002779.htm/maybe

The ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY of the UNITED STATES provides information for consumers about toxic substances. They report that the lye and sulfuric acid found in drain cleaners have dangerous fumes that may cause skin burns, blindness and death if swallowed.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002779.htm

In a paper presented at the National Conference in November 4, 2000, Dr. Alan Woolf, M.D. MPH presented the findings of a 1999 study, which included products in the drain cleaner class poisoned 81,000 preschool aged children.

Many household cleaners are so toxic that citizens and lawmakers are taking notice and taking action.

Marla Cone of the LA Times reports that California officials are planning a move away from toxic chemicals http://www.latimes.com/wireless/avantgo/la-me-green31jan31,0,829115.story

Working with Massachusetts lawmakers, The Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow (AHT) is a coalition of citizens, scientists, health professionals, workers, and educators seeking preventive action on toxic household hazards. http://healthytomorrow.org/about.html

Drain cleaners are not only dangerous but that break down in to phosphates and phosphorous that are having a negative impact on our aquatic environments.

In a report published by the MASSACHUSETTS WATER RESOURCE AUTHORITY, called A Healthy Environment Starts at Home, it is stated that hazardous household products are polluting Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay from both normal use and improper disposal.(Appendix V)

http://www.mwra.state.ma.us/publications/hhw2005.pdf

Plumb-Away is the only certified green drain opener, child friendly, made of recycled material and works faster than the hazardous chemical alternatives. Using the Green Seal standard, Steridyne Laboratories INC. of East Brunswick, New Jersey gave Plum-Away praise for its innovative drain opener stating that Plumb-Away would not be toxic to aquatic life.

WARL channel 5 in North Carolina, in a story posted Nov 7, 2006, indicated, Americans spend 150 million dollars a year on Chemical Drain Cleaners.

http://www.wral.com/5onyourside/story/1092186/?print_friendly=1

I researched Plumb-Away and used it myself before recommending that the Touch Tanks for Kids Board of Directors join in partnership with 1 Mark Consumer Products, Plumb-Away’s parent company. The evidence is clear. Business leaders must make environmentally friendly alternatives available to their customers. Please help us move toward healthier oceans, our children are counting on us.

Proceeds from this site, support interactive environmental education projects, like www.touchtanksforkids.org.
