Solar power for home use has become a realistic alternative for many in these days of expensive foreign oil and the harmful economic and environmental impact on our planet. The deficit of energy resources, the accelerated depletion of non-renewable energy, the ever-rising requirements for power supply, the persistant warnings concerning our environment are sufficient proof to tell us that it’s time to do something. So, what can be done? First, why not try solar power for use in your home?

If you are suprised by this notion, I can tell you that home use of your own solar power,  not only helps the environment and helps save power; it also cuts down our electricity costs considerably. Now, that’s a real-life advantage apart from how you will greatly benefit the world,  believe me, you will feel good about doing this.

Let us first take a look at the advantages of using  solar power at home
:

• less dependence on frustrating resources: Who wants to depend upon public utilities forever? Living off the grid allows you to rely solely on your own resources and not those supplied by the government or corporations. How often have you cursed when faced with a power outage in the middle of an important work or a party? Wouldn’t you like to take charge of these factors that affect your life? With alternative power solutions at home, you can take a look at this and see how you can save money:

• Using natural resources like solar power, doesn’t cost anything: How would you feel when you didn’t have to pay for the power you use? Wouldn’t it be delightful to use as much power as you want without worrying about the electricity meter? You can make use of the readily available power in nature to light your home and prepare your meals. The solar power solutions and the wind power solutions are the answers to your quest for power (well, literally!).

• Save money by lowering your costs: How would you like to go to your mailbox and never again find an electic bill? Using alternative power solutions gives you a rapid return on your investment, as power to your home will eventually be free!

• Making way for a better environment: Don’t you bless the people who planted trees along time ago not expecting them to miraculously grow? They planted those trees for the future generations. Make the path of the coming generations secure by giving them a greener, healthier world. Cut back on the usage of consumable energy sources..

If your are wondering whether making your own solar power at home is feasible, check out alternative energy solutions. You might be surprised to find out that they are not only economically beneficial but very doable as well.

It is not as complicated as you might think to .  Is one of your dreams to make your own electricity and not have to depend on a utility company? Then your ideal goal is to live “off grid.”  Most people who live off grid are located in remote locations where electric utility service is not even available.   There is growing interest in choosing off-grid living as a way of life.

A Guide to Off-Grid Solar Power

There are a couple of important considerations involved in how to . First, you’ll need to learn how to use your electricity more mindfully.  You won’t have to live without it, but you don’t want to waste it, either.

It’s also important that you familiarize yourself with your solar energy system, how it functions and what type of maintenence it requires.  It would be best if you become an expert on your particular system, so you can fix any problem that comes up. Becoming an “pro” is not too difficult to do since there is so much information on solar energy available for anyone to access. However, it can require a bit of your time and commitment.

Typically, a solar power system  is made up of nine components

First, the photovoltaic array and mounting rack. Wikipedia describes the array as “a linked collection of photovoltaic modules, which are in turn made of multiple interconnected solar cells”. The mounting rack allows you to attach them the roof and face them toward the sun.

2. The array DC (direct current) disconnect. This acts as a “breaker” between the system and the array and allows you to disconnect the system to perform troubleshooting or fix problems.

3. The charge controller. This device keeps the batteries from overcharging.

4. The battery bank. The battery bank stores excess electricity. Because there will be overcast periods when sunlight cannot reach the solar cells, you will need about 2 to 3 days worth of stored electricity

5. The system meter. The system meter is like your car dashboard. It shows what’s going on with the various components of the system.

Sixth, is the main DC disconnect. You will know this better as a breaker which is placed between the batteries and the inverter.

7. The inverter. This is the component that transforms the DC (direct current) electricity, which is generated by the array and stored in the batteries, into the AC (alternating current) electricity that can run your household appliances.

8. The breaker panel. This is the same type of breaker panel the utility company would use.

9. The backup generator. A backup generator may be needed if there is a period of overcast days and you have depleted the power that was stored in the batteries. You can use traditional fossil fuels, but you may want to use biodiesel to maintain your green lifestyle.

Now that we’ve examined the components of the off grid system, you can see why it’s not that difficult to become your own expert. Each component is pretty simple in and of itself. The only moving parts are in the backup generator, and you hopefully won’t be using that very much.
