1974 saw research emanating from the Swiss Meteorological Institute on why it was that people were negatively affected (e.g. headaches, depression, heart attacks) by various trade winds around the earth. Lead has been known as potential health hazard. The ubiquity of lead and its known toxicity to man and wildlife necessitates its continual determination in the environment. Another major contributing source of environmental lead burden is from the automobile and industrial machinery exhaust from the internal combustion engines. The use of organic lead compounds such as tetraethyl lead and tetra methyl lead as additives in petrol has been of continual concern to environmental scientists and policy makers. Studies have shown that the body lead levels of modern humans are about 500 times higher than those of pre-industrial times. Emphasis in the analysis is given to the public health aspects of soil lead contamination at field sites. The analysis includes a review of the areas like populations at high risk, sources of lead exposure, extent of lead poisoning in children, soil characterization, environmental fate of lead and the bioavailability of lead, health effects of lead poisoning.

Vehicular emission is of concern particularly in urban environment that has low assimilative capacity. The emissions react forming various species in various meteorological conditions interfering with man’s activities. To counter some of these effects like fog and breathing excessive amounts of these gases, researchers are trying to discover new sources of energy and power. There are now vehicles run entirely on natural gas as opposed to petrol. Vehicular emission in typical urban centre constitute over 60% of total pollutant emission compared to industry, power plants, space heating, refuse disposal etc. Hydrocarbons and nitrogen dioxide emitted principally from automobiles are the major ingredients of photochemical smog. In processing the crude, some fractions of low molecular weight easily come out but with low rating referred to as the octane number. For this faction to be useful for powering automobiles, the octane number has to be raised. To do this a compound of lead called Tetraethyl lead (Tel) is used. This introduces lead into the petrol raising the octane number and functions as lubricant for valve seats. With these two beneficial qualities, we should have no problem in promoting leaded petrol.

The combustion of petrol is inefficient in most cases and gases and particulates are emitted as exhaust gas/particulate. One of the perturbing ones is lead particulate, which has detrimental physiological affects. Ingestion of lead has been link to several physiological disorders in man such as interference with IQ of children of school age, gastrointestinal disorder, nausea, circulatory collapse, fatigue, blindness, CNS disorder, anemia etc. The use of leaded petrol therefore needs to be review in this country like in other countries of the world to reduce the health effects. It is possible to produce petrol of high and desirable octane number without the use of lead tetraethyl using appropriate technology e.g. cracking of higher molecular crude, use of methyl tetra-butyl ether (MBTE), Fluid Catalytic Cracker (F.C.C.) etc.

Other sources of lead are mining, smelting, printing, lead paint, flacks, sewage sludge and the use of pesticide containing lead compounds [10]. However these sources account to a little extent. Urban environments in general have received higher depositions of lead from vehicular emissions than have rural areas. A number of studies have been carried out to determine the lead concentration in dust, dirt, particulates and leaf samples in different urban areas around the world.
